The Challenge

Manufacturing facilities like US Motor Works typically run substantial equipment loads throughout the day, which drives significant demand charges, the portion of a commercial utility bill based on a facility’s peak power draw rather than total energy used. Solar alone reduces overall consumption, but it doesn’t fully address peak-demand spikes from equipment starting up or running simultaneously. The facility also needed a mounting approach that would protect the roof’s long-term condition once the array was installed, not just at the moment of installation.

The Solution

NEI installed a 224 kW solar array using 374 Qcell 590-watt panels, paired with two Sol-Ark 60K inverters sized to the facility’s electrical load. The mounting system was installed using a penetration-based method, then a protective coating was applied across the entire roof surface, sealing the installation points and extending the roof’s service life alongside the solar array rather than working against it. Two Great Power battery units, totaling 418 kWh of combined storage, were added to allow the facility to discharge stored energy during peak-demand periods rather than drawing that additional power from the grid at peak utility rates. Together, the system gives US Motor Works a substantial solar offset, a direct tool for reducing demand charges, and a roof protected for the long term.
